From Chris Love, the Doe Valley Golf Course Superintendent:

Well I guess by now we have all recovered from the holidays, and are well on our way to shedding the pounds that the holidays put on us.  I’m not sure what February will bring us, as far as weather is concerned, but January was certainly a bizarre month.  As I am writing this, a storm system just blew through that brought with it some tornadoes for the surrounding areas.  That is definitely not normal for this time of the year, but who knows what “normal” is anymore.  Nowadays, it seems that our weather is doing outrageous

things more often than not.

On the other hand, with this odd weather came lots of great golfing days in the month of January.  It has also made it much more pleasant to be outside working.  We have stayed pretty busy these last couple of months, doing everything from building tees to mowing grass.  If you have been around the golf course recently, you’ve probably seen that we have started moving some dirt and shaping the areas where a few new forward tees will be built.  We have been talking about it for a while now, and we finally decided where to put them, and had a few dry days to start moving some dirt.  The process of building these tees will take some time, but hopefully we will have them ready to play in the early part of the golf season.  We have also taken down many dead trees, and have quite a few more to go, but that’s always a work in progress around here.

We have plenty of things to do to keep us busy for the rest of the off-season, but I am certain that the golfing season will be here before we know it.  I hate to say it, but I am pretty sure that “winter” is eventually going to get here.  I just hope it takes it easy on us.  In the meantime, I would encourage you to take advantage of some of these nice days, and get out and play a round of golf.  It might help you lose those last few pounds lingering from the holidays, and it is always a bonus if you can get a few rounds in during the dreary winter months.
